Oh Riga. A place which I will always look back at fondly, as the memory brings
a sly smile to my face instantly making my day a little brighter.
We took the bus from Tallin at 6 am, on two hours of sleep, and arrived in
Riga about seven hours later. This journey would be enough to knock out the
most hardcore party animal for a week, but such is the beauty and the vibe of
this place that after a quick shower we hit the town and the party didn't stop
until three days later when we took the plane back home.
Riga offers everything that I want from a holiday. Bars that don't close
until I tell them to, great food, beautiful women, wonderful art nouveau architecture
and scenery, beautiful women, and cheap prices. Did I mention the women?
The people in Riga are extremely friendly. All you have to do is stop
someone in the street and ask them something, and they will open up to you as
if you are a lifelong friend.
If you are going to Riga, I suggest that you stay somewhere in the old
town. The old town is made up of little side streets and alleys which are lined
with bars, clubs, cafes and shops to suit everyone's taste. One thing I greatly
enjoyed doing in Riga was wandering around in the old town and exploring the
back alleys, as there was always some hidden gem to be found there in the
shadows.
Riga is also a very safe city. I have travelled to many a destination where
the locals have tried to rip me off in some form or other. The aforementioned
Tallin comes to mind, however, as long as you use your common sense, Latvians
will not go out of their way just to scam you.
All in all, Riga is one of those places which you have to visit in order to
appreciate, and if you are considering this place for a holiday or bachelor
party then stop considering and just do it. You will not be disappointed.
Just remember, what goes on in Riga stays in Riga.
